New Tool Evaluates ROI of Street Light Retrofits

| June 11, 2012 | Comments

A new Retrofit Analysis Tool is being offered by the Department of Energy Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium in collaboration with the Clinton Climate Initiative to help municipalities, utilities and businesses analyze the costs and ROI of retrofitting existing street light systems.

This tool allows the user to enter project details and calculates the cost savings of upgrading existing streetlight systems over a period of time. It calculates the cost of fixtures, installation, maintenance and energy costs to provide project costs and expected savings over time. It even calculates available rebates that can be gained from implementing the upgrades. Inputs can be adjusted until the project provides the return on investment that meets specific goals or covers the cost of financing. Inputs include the number and type of fixtures to be replaced and the amount charged per kilowatt hour for energy. The tool even includes an escalation model so that costs can be examined over a period of time, as the assumption is that energy rates will change.

Calculators such as this are designed to measure the value a lighting retrofit project can deliver. Acuity Brands can make the benefits of such a project a reality by providing state of the art LED luminaires and control solutions that can further capitalize on energy savings. The Autobahn series of outdoor street lights from American Lighting Products provides high-performance, energy efficient solutions for local and major roadways.

To reach the highest possible savings in an outdoor street lighting system, a controls solution must be included. The powerful ROAM (Remote Operations Asset Management) system provides advanced control to reduce energy usage, prolong fixture life, and simplify maintenance operations. ROAM provides pinpoint accuracy of fixtures requiring maintenance and allows the operator to monitor the performance of every available fixture on their system.

ROAM’s Work Order Management system gives lighting system operators the ability to dispatch outages directly to repair crews and validates completion of the work, enhancing operational efficiency and improving customer satisfaction.
