On Wednesday, May 23rd, the Southern Nevada Chapter National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) was honored when a long-retired pioneer in the electrical industry paid a visit to the bi-monthly dinner meeting of the Chapter. Omer Gifford, one of the founding members of Gifford Electric, and past Treasurer of the NECA Chapter, briefly stepped out of retirement to receive a 50 year commemorative plaque from NECA National and the Southern Nevada Chapter NECA.
The plaque was presented by Chapter President, Dennis Nelson to commemorate 50 years of continued membership in the premier electrical association, NECA. Mr. Nelson thanked Omer Gifford for having the foresight to join and be vital members of NECA. Mr. Nelson also congratulated Mr. Gifford for his many successes and Gifford Electric’s fifty year association with NECA.
The event took place at the Platinum Hotel and proved to be a festive occasion.
In 1959, three brothers, Sheldon, Omer and Melvin Gifford, pooled their resources and founded Gifford Electric, Inc. Melvin was unfortunately killed in an accident the following year. Sheldon and Omer continued a successful business relationship for 30 years.
In 1962 Gifford Electric joined the NECA Chapter. From 1986 through 1994 Omer Gifford was elected to the NECA Board of Directors and served as Treasurer. In 1995 Omer declined nomination to the Board.
Over the years, significant growth occurred as Gifford Electric developed its’ Industrial and Commercial Construction Division and provided a Service/Maintenance Division for their customers.
Sheldon retired from the business in 1989 and for the next four years, Omer began turning more and more of the business responsibilities to his successors, Michelle (Gifford) Williams and Benton Kutch; passing along his knowledge and experience in business and financial operations to the next generation. In 1993, Omer retired and still serves as wise counsel in business decisions today.
Also in 1993, Gifford Electric added the Systems Division to their list of electrical services. This allowed Gifford Electric to now provide not only the electrical power needs for customers, but the computer, telephone and other low voltage system requirements as well. This making Gifford Electric a one source contact for all electrical needs.
In 2009, Gifford Electric was certified as a women-owned business and is currently pursuing that avenue to produce additional sales.
The Southern Nevada Chapter is comprised of 36 Union Electrical Contractors who engage in all aspects of electrical work. For more information call 702-876-7860 or visit www.sncneca.com
